Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) is one of the most important artists in Finland. Year 2012 is the 150th anniversary of her birth and therefore there are several exhibitions around Finland throughout the year. She is one of my favourite artists and I really admire the soulful self-portraits.
In the beginning of the year
Villa Gyllenberg had an exhibition About Spiriality In Art with some 60 art works of Helene Schjerfbeck. I took a guided tour and it was really interesting to hear the stories behind the paintings and what was going on in artist's personal life at the same time she had made the paintings.
Ateneum in Helsinki is currently presenting the largest ever Helene Schjerfbeck exhibition 01.06.2012 - 14.10.2012. I was really impressed and pleased how comprehensive the exhibition was and really need to go there again with plenty of time. I already took a brief round tour on a rainy Sunday and was totally overwhelmed.

Ostrobothnian Museum also has a small exhibition about Helene Schjerfbeck and the female artists of her time during the period 25.5.2012 – 23.9.2012. As majority of the paintings are in Ateneum there are not that many Schjerfeck paintings in Vaasa, but mainly the other artists like Fanny Churberg, Ellen Thesleff and Maria Wiik.

I would recommend Ateneum's Schjerfbeck exhibition to everybody as there so many significant art works on display and you can see why she is one of Finland’s most acclaimed painters
